The Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier will reopen with social distancing restrictions in place on Saturday for people wanting to fish.

The pier, which closed in March, will be reopening Saturday from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, Escambia County announced in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

The pier will only be open for fishing, and will be marked with spaces 6 feet apart.

Pedestrians will not be allowed on to the pier.

Reopening the pier comes a day after the County Commission voted to reopen Pensacola Beach beginning Friday with the same hours with the restrictions that people must follow social distancing guidelines.

© Gregg Pachkowski, gregg@pnj.com The Pensacola Beach Pier is closed during the COVID-19 pandemic at Casino Beach on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

On the beach, people must stay in groups of 10 or less and groups must be at least 6 feet apart.

The emergency order approved by the County Commission to reopen the beach carries a $500 fine or 60-day jail sentence for failing to comply with the order.
